Here is some high-grade Dinosaur Gembone! It is a beautiful piece of Gembone from northern Utah, very near Colorado. It measures about 7.25" by 3.75" (varies) Thickness varies from about 2.5" to about 2.95" (varies)(just under 70 mm to a bit over 70 mm see caliper photos). A gorgeous blue with some white. It is a virtually complete bone, a leg bone from a Sauropod.

The specimen weighs 4 lbs. Photos of this specimen are taken dry, since one side and part of the other side are polished.

There appears to be a sawblade scar or crack in 2 areas of the specimen. From the Morrison Formation, probably from Utah along the Utah-Colorado border. The Jurassic, about 150 million years ago. This is where gembone is found.

It is never Cretaceous, and the Morrison Formation is home to the best gemstone. Most gemstone is from sauropods, though Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and a few other species can be found.

Gembone is one of only 5 recognized gems from living things. The other are pearl, ammolite, jet and amber.

It is made from dinosaur bone that has agatized, and minerals from groundwater are deposited within the bones, where the marrow used to be. The trabeculae, which were the spongy partitions in the bone, form a series of borders around the colored minerals.

The trabeculae can be dark or light, as can the minerals. The gembone colors are many. Most (about 95%) are "earthy" colors, such as brown, greys and tans. However, reds, blues, whites, yellows, oranges, etc. Are in a small number of them (about 5 % of gemstones). These are the most popular colors. The minerals causing these colorations include agate, hematite, iron, pyrite, jasper, marcasite, quartz or other crystal or mineral. Some trabeculae "cell walls" resemble spider webs, and are called spider-web gembone, and sell for a premium. Dark trabeculae is usually desired, as it contrasts well with the colors of the minerals. "Glassiness" and clarity are also important. "AMERICAN DINOSAUR The Vanishing of Gembone by Thomas Helfrich", accurately predicts the increasing rarity and virtual disappearance of gembone, we are told.

That is exactly what has happened. Top grade gemstone is almost impossible to find in the wild anymore.

We have heard excellent gembone has increased many times in value in just the last few years. Gemstone looks brighter and clearer when it has been polished. We invite you to visit our store. Some words of caution about COA's: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. A COA should be specific to one particular specimen, with a photo of the item on it. It can never be transferred to a different specimen. We want to make sure you are fairly treated by us always.
